Gilda Anna Metzger

Gilda Metzger (Sultan) died peacefully on March 31, 2015 with her loving husband and daughters at her side. Prior to her move to Tiverton, RI in 2009, Gilda was a lifelong resident of New York City. She graduated from Walton HS and Hunter College. She married Leon, her childhood sweetheart, in April, 1949 and together they had 2 daughters.

Gilda was President of the Parent-Teachers Association at her daughters’ elementary school. She taught for 17 years at P.S. 67 in the Bronx, while completing her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at Lehman College. After teaching, she was the office manager at Carrafiello-Diehl advertising agency in Irvington.

During retirement, Gilda and her husband were active in the Tarrytown Seniors Club, where she served as Secretary, Vice president and President. In 2003, she was selected to be a distinguished member of the County of Westchester Hall of Fame, in recognition of her contributions to Senior Citizens in the County.

Gilda was an active retiree attending classes in art and memoir writing, and participating in a theater group at her home at the Edgemont Condominium Community in Tarrytown.

Despite living her final years with progressive memory loss, Gilda was known for her humor, her warm smile and her grace and dignity.

Gilda is survived by her husband, Leon; her daughter Ellen Metzger and her husband Marvin Lange of New York City; and her daughter Lois Erhartic and her husband Paul of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. She was so proud and grateful for her three grandchildren, Rebecca Lange of New York City, Gabe Erhartic of San Franciso, CA and Brian Erhartic of Hermosa Beach, CA.

Burial will be at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Fairview, New Jersey on Friday, April 3rd. A public celebration of her life will be held at Sakonnet Bay Retirement Community, 1215 Main Rd.,Tiverton, Rhode Island on Saturday, April 4, at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 245 Waterman Street, Suite 306, Providence, RI 02906.
