Jim received all his education in his birth city of Providence at St. Augustine School, La Salle Academy, and Brown University. In years past, he was a real estate consultant and expert witness with a specialty in zoning and land use, someone who thrilled to describe much of his home-state’s land and buildings in exquisite detail.
Jim thrived in community, treasuring friendships made through Sigma Chi International Fraternity, Wannamoisett Country Club, and various Roman Catholic church congregations.
Love of music and theater was a constant in Jim’s life whether singing on stage, in church choir, or in his college band puckishly named “Nothing Yet.” From Don Quixote in La Salle’s “Man of La Mancha” to his last role as Vinnie in Violet’s and Garzilli’s “The Family” produced at Trinity Repertory Theater, he came alive on stage.
Jim never met a sport he couldn’t master or enjoy earlier in life, with special fondness for golf, tennis, fishing, ice hockey, skiing, and water-sports. Wheelchair-bound later in life, he maintained the upper body fitness that brought autonomy.
Jim is survived by his beloved Mother, Alice Donahue Sloan; his daughters, Katherine McDade Sloan and Olivia Donahue Sloan; five siblings and their spouses; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine Church, 639 Mount Pleasant Avenue, Providence on Friday, May 24, at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Antoine Community, Attn: Development Director, 10 Rhodes Avenue, North Smithfield, RI 02896 or https://stantoine.net/giving-and-community-support/
