

Joseph Patrick Butler, Sr., 84, of Coventry, passed away peacefully onChristmas Eve, Sunday, December 24, 2017 at the Philip HulitarInpatient Center, in Providence, surrounded by his loving family. Hewas the husband of Virginia R. (Tacey) Butler, and they were marriedfor 64 wonderful years.Born in Providence on February 21, 1933, he was the son of the lateAnthony E. and Alice (Hughes) Butler.Joseph joined the United States Navy in 1950 and served his countryproudly on the USS John Hood DD655, and the USS Cascade before beinghonorably discharged. He worked as a meat cutter for Stop & Shop formany years, retiring in 1991. After his retirement he worked part-timefor Tom's Fruit & Deli.He was active in many organizations. Joe was a life member of the VFWPost 9404 in Coventry, for which he served a period of time asCommander, the Ireland "32" Society, Saint Andrews Scottish Society ofRI, and he served on the Coventry School Committee, later becoming theSchool Committee Chairman.In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his 5 children,Joseph P. Butler, Jr., and his wife, Joyce, of Cranston, PatriciaLeBlanc, and her husband, Michael, of Coventry, Sheila Guy, and herhusband, William, of Greene, Jean Card, and her husband, Steven, ofCoventry, and Patrick Butler, and his wife, Kimberly, of Cumberland;12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.His funeral will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 9:00 am,followed by a funeral service at 9:30 am, in the Russell J. Boyle &Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (Rt. 117 - Exit 10 off I-95)WARWICK. Interment with military honors will be in the Rhode IslandVeterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours will be onThursday, December 28, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
