Joseph A. Izzi, Sr., MD, age 87, passed away May 8, 2022 after a long illness at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 12, 1935 to Carolyn (DeLello) and Roger Izzi, Sr. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Sabella) for 54 years and was a loving father to Dr. Joseph A. Izzi, Jr. (Lori) and Dr. Jason R Izzi (Kimberly), and adoring Grandpy to his wonderful grandchildren Santino & Jayci. He was the loving brother of the late Carolyn Marano, and brother of Dr. Roger A. Izzi, Jr. He was the brother-in-law of Albert Marano, Michael Sabella & Nancy Izzi. He was a loving and mentoring uncle of John, Dr. Albert, Stephen and Roger Marano and Matthew and Roger Izzi, III.
Joseph graduated from La Salle Academy, Providence College and The University of Bologna Medical School. He did his internship and orthopedic residency at Rhode Island Hospital. Upon finishing his residency, he served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in De Nang, Vietnam during the Tet Offensive.
Dr. Izzi was a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who practiced for 45 years in Providence and North Providence. He was a member of the Providence Medical Society, RI Orthopaedic Society, American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, University of Bologna Alumni Association, Eastern Orthopaedic Society and The Irish American Orthopaedic Society.
Joseph’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Zaida, Frances and the Balon boys for all their love and care over the past seven years. They will always be a special part of our family.
Visitation will be held Friday 4:00-7:00 p.m. in the Pontarelli-Marino Home, 971 Branch Ave., Providence. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial in St. Ann's Church, 280 Hawkins St., Providence on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Graveside burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, www.stjude.org .
