

Katherine M. Lovatt (Leyden) “Kate” 86, a lifelong resident of the Smith Hill section of Providence, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late John G. “Jack” Lovatt. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Katherine (McGovern) Leyden. Kate as she was affectionately known, worked as a social worker at Progress for Providence for 32 years, worked with the late Sister Fran Conway, tirelessly helping the less fortunate at Mary’s House and Saint Patrick’s Soup Kitchen, and volunteered at the Capitol Ridge Harbor Program. Kate was very proud of her Irish heritage and was the first female Grand Marshall of the Smith Hill St. Patrick’s Parade. She enjoyed good company, loved conversation, to share a laugh, was a people person, and believed that family was most important. Kate had a sharp wit, great sense of humor and a fantastic memory. She leaves her two daughters, Maureen Kaplan and her husband, Donald (Ret. Det. P.P.D.) of West Warwick and Kathleen “Kathy” Marchetti, of Johnston; a brother, John J. “Jack” Leyden (Ret. U.S. Marshall) of North Kingstown and Naples, FL; three grandchildren, Craig Kaplan, Richard Marchetti, Jr., and Katelyn Johnson, and her husband, Curtis; two great grandchildren, John and James Kaplan; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, that she was extremely close to. She was known to her family as “Auntie Sister”. Kate was the grandmother of the late Keith Gregory Kaplan and sister of the late Thomas J. Leyden (Ret. LT. P.P.D) and Martin F. Leyden. Her funeral with visitation will be Tuesday, July 7, 2015 from 8:00 -10:00 am, in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, in Saint Patrick Church, 244 Smith Street, Providence. Interment will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
