Dear Mrs. Goldstein: I was saddened tonight to learn of Leon's passing in the BAM. Leon was my advisor at Brown, and he brought me up to work with him at MDIBL in 1975. He gave me my first real job in scientific research and allowed me to do an honors thesis with him. I am now a professor at Stony Brook University, and still utilize the lessons he taught me. I am so sorry for your loss. Anne McElroy, Brown '76

Dear Barbara,

I send my condolences as well as those of the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology to you and the family. Leon was a great scientist and mentor, and his contributions to the department are greatly appreciated. He will be missed. Please let me know if there is anything we can do or that you need. At some point, I will be asked by President Paxson to deliver a Memorial Minute in Leon's honor before the Brown University faculty at an upcoming general faculty meeting. It will be my honor to do so.

Dear Barbara, I was very much saddened to hear of Leon's death through a friend who saw his obituary. I have so many happy memories of the summers at the lab years ago and of getting a ride with you when I wanted to visit the Cape. I know my mother would wish to send her sympathies, as well, even though her Alzheimer's is by now so far advanced that she doesn't really understand.

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Warm regards,
Astrid Schmidt-Nielsen
p.s. I would have sent a written note, but I didn't have your address.
