Louis Joseph Regine, Jr., "Lou" of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, formerly of Middletown and North Providence, Rhode Island died peacefully at Rhode Island Hospital on April 18, 2017. He was 94 years old. He is survived by his devoted wife of seventy years, Elaine Frances Laudati, their six children and their spouses, Susan and Warren DeSaulnier of Chelmsford, MA and Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Linda and Del Martin of Middletown, RI and Bradenton, FL, Chip and Gabriela Regine of Coventry, RI, Joanne and Ron Lebel of Portsmouth, RI and Bradenton, FL, Lisa and Bob Childs of Cranston, RI, and Judy and Bob Wise of Providence, RI, their 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Celia and Louise Regine, his brother Victor "Buckie" Regine, his sister Carmel Salafia and a step-grandchild, Erin DeSaulnier.
He was a successful businessman who owned and operated Regine Pontiac Inc. in Providence, RI for over 40 years, an automobile dealership founded by his father.
Lou was an avid sports fan and a very good athlete in his own right. He played football at LaSalle Academy in Providence, RI, LaSalle Military Academy in Long Island, NY and Brown University in Providence, RI where he met his wife Elaine. After returning from World War II where he served in the United States Army Air Force, he completed his education at Brown where he captained his football team. He received All-American honors and he received letters of interest from the Los Angles Rams and the New York Giants. He was inducted into both the RI and the Brown University halls of fame. Lou continued his love of athletics playing golf. He was a member of Metacomet and Wanumetonomy Country Clubs in Rhode Island and Eastpointe Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, FL where he served as president and "ex-officio" president of his Rhode Island group where he organized many golf events and Friday night dinners. In later years he continued his love of sports listening to his beloved Yankees on the radio and Patriots on television.
But most of all Lou will be remembered as the ultimate family man: a devoted husband to his wife Elaine; a generous and supportive father to his six children and their spouses; and a cherished "Pop" to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. May you rest in peace Dad, it's 5 o'clock somewhere.
A funeral mass to celebrate his life will be held on June 24, 2017 at 10:00 am at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 800 Pippin Orchard Road, Cranston, RI 02921.
