

Born in Bucharest, Romania, Marguerite was educated at the University of Bucharest, at the Sorbonne in Paris, Radcliffe Institute at Harvard and Brown University in Providence where she has lived since 1952. She also held a degree in botany.
An illustrator, a writer and a poet, much of her work, for both children and adults, as author and illustrator, has appeared in many publications, including the New Yorker and the New York Times. Lothrop, Lee & Shepherd Company published “The Alligators Toothache”, “The King Who Could Not Sneeze”, “The Year of the Waterbearer” and “When the Snow is Blue”- all both written and illustrated by Marguerite. More recently her illustrations adorned the pages of The Songs of the Shtetl. Marguerite was a professor at Rhode Island School of Design.
She is survived by two nieces and one cousin and was predeceased by her parents and one sister.
Burial will be on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 11:00 am in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
