

Mary I. Barresi (Hines), 89, lovingly nicknamed and known as Amie by her family and closest friends, died Friday evening, September 11, 2009, on the Vigil of the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary at Thompson House in Brattleboro, Vermont. Mary was born in Providence, R.I. and lived the majority of her life on Natick Avenue, in Oak Lawn, the western section of Cranston. As a child she lived on the family dairy farm, one of five children of James Gerald Hines and Ellie Mae Stone. She graduated from Cranston High School and attended Rhode Island College of Education. She was employed by the Cranston School Department where she met the love of her life, Angelo Barresi, who predeceased her in 1987. She married Angelo on July 2nd 1949. Together they traveled cross-country by car to Yellowstone National Park, a trip that the two would treasure all their lives. She devoted her life to her husband and children willing to sacrifice anything for them. Strong in her walk of faith, Mary was a devoted Catholic, who strove to model her life after her namesake, the Virgin Mother, Mary. She had a love of cooking and baking and was a master at apple pies, brownies, and Italian cookies. In her later life, Mary's greatest joy came from spending time with her family and most of all with her beloved grandchildren. Despite her limited sight, she would still take her grandchildren on her lap and "read" them stories and sing to them. She leaves a son, Paul F. Barresi MD, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and two daughters, Angela M. Yakovleff of Wilmington, Vermont and Janice E. Ozguc of Weston, Massachusetts and eight grandchildren, Alexander & Amie Yakovleff, Hannah , Joseph, Evan, Nicolas, and Jackson Barresi and Alara Ozguc. She also leaves a brother, J. Gerald Hines and his wife Cecile, a brother Robert Hines and his wife Mary, all of Cranston, R.I., many loving nieces and nephews and numerous dear friends. She was pre-deceased by a sister Grace Canning and brother Rev. Msgr. Leo Hines. She will be remembered as a strong, independent woman who wanted to love and be loved. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 9:00 am in the Immaculate Conception Church 237 Garden Hills Dr, Cranston, RI 02920 , to which relatives and friends are invited.. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 pm in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (RT 117), Warwick. In lieu of flowers donations to INSIGHT, 43 Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick, RI 02888 or Mass Intentions in Mary's memory would be appreciated. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 26th at 12:00 noon at St. Michaels' Roman Catholic Church, Walnut Street, Brattleboro, with Rev. Richard O'Donnell, Pastor, celebrant. A reception will follow the Mass to be held in the parish garden adjacent to the church"
