Mary was born to Valentine and Mary Murphy FUNCHION. Her parents were originally from Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland, before settling in County Kerry, where Mary and her brothers were raised. The family was known for raising racing dogs, and Mary’s lifelong love of dogs and horse racing began in her childhood and remained one of her greatest passions throughout her life.
As a young woman in County Kerry, Mary embraced many of the traditions of her Irish heritage. She was an accomplished accordion player and an avid camogie player, the traditional Irish women’s stick-and-ball sport. She loved the camaraderie and competition the game provided, and those experiences helped shape the strength, determination, and spirited nature that remained with her throughout her life.
At the age of 19, Mary emigrated to the United States in search of new opportunities. Although she made America her home, Ireland always held a special place in her heart, and she remained proud of her Irish roots throughout her life.
A devout Catholic, Mary lived her faith every day. She embodied the spirit of an Irish warrior—strong in faith, resilient through hardship, fiercely devoted to her family, and never afraid to face life’s challenges with courage and determination.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, William FUNCHION, Patrick FUNCHION, and Dermot FUNCHION; and her beloved lifelong partner, William Almeida.
She is survived by her children, Ruben Martino, Gina Martino Rogers and her husband, David Rogers, and Jerry Martino and his lifelong partner, Deborah Houghton; and by her cherished granddaughter, Stephanie Franco Rago and her husband, Zack Rago.
Mary devoted her life to caring for her disabled son, Ruben, with unwavering patience, compassion, and unconditional love. In her later years she resided in Lincoln, Rhode Island, with Jerry and Deborah, where she found great joy in nature, faithfully feeding birds, squirrels, and the wild turkeys that visited her home each day.
Known for her wit as much as her warmth, Mary would answer questions about her younger years with a smile and the familiar words, “What are you writing, a book?”
Mary leaves behind a legacy of faith, courage, compassion, kindness, and unconditional love that will continue to inspire her family for generations.
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Her funeral services and burial will be private.
