ProvidenceMARY ELLEN ( MCDERMOTT) HUGHES entered eternal life on Thursday, November 4, in Providence. She was the wife of the late Joseph A. Hughes.Born 1912, in Coolaney, County Sligo, Ireland to the late William and Bridget (Durkin) Mc Dermott, she was the sister of the late John, William, Katie, Michael Mc Dermott, Delia Mullaly and Ann Canning. She leaves a brother Joseph Mc Dermott and Margaret Kennedy of County Sligo, Ireland. In 1929, Mary Hughes arrived with her brother John from Ireland on the German steamer, KARA SHUE. She found America to be a wonderful place where "money grew on trees." Mary became a naturalized citizen; and she proudly commented on the politics of the City of Providence until her final days.Mrs. Hughes' life revolved around her Catholic faith. The only luxury she ever allowed herself was to send her children to private schools for a good Catholic education. Her grateful children acknowledge the sacrifices she made working in the "sweat shops" in Olneyville for this luxury. When she retired, Mary and Joe attended daily Mass at St. Anthony Parish. After her dear husband passed on in 1984, she went to daily Mass and weekly Adoration at St. Bartholmew Church. She was a steady presence there reciting the Rosary with her dear friends Richard and Vera. Mary had a loving devotion to the Blessed Mother. Mary Hughes was a strong woman who never wavered when dealing with the vagaries of life. She believed in her God, her family, and her country. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Hughes who cared for Mary until the end of Mary's life; Vincent Hughes and family of Rockland, MA; Paul G. Hughes and family of Cranston, RI, and her extended family of nieces, nephews, and fellow parishioners. At Mary's request, no wake will be held. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 9, St. Anthony Church, 549 Plainfield Street, Providence. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. with Celebration of the Liturgy at 10:00 am. Burial will be at St. Ann's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in memory of Mary E. McDermott Hughes to The San Miguel School , P.O. Box 6367, Providence, RI 02940.
