PART II Continued One of the favorite pastimes in any Providence factory, was to play the "XXXXXX pool". Before there was state sponsored lotteries, the lotteries were run by the XXXXX. The lottery numbers could be found in the sports pages everyday based on the amount of money wagered at Narragansett Park, Lincoln or Suffolk downs. "The numbers" was the only reason why anyone would buy the Boston Herald in Providence. You could find the daily number by reading down the pennies column of the monies handled by whatever race track that had open dates. To play the numbers, you would pick a three digit number from 00 1 to 999, the odds being almost 1000-1. The wise guys would pay off $600. ( tax free) if you guess correctly. ( Notice that odds from the Mafia are much better than those odds offered by the State of Rhode Island today). Grandma and Connie each played 5 cents every day of work. Year after year, Connie Paliotta and Mary Hughes played "the XXXXXX pool". Runners would come by each and every day to see collect their nickels but rarely payoff. One day Mary and Connies number came in.

Joe, Mary's brother will miss her phone calls and letters to the Emerald Isle.She was a strong willed woman and her deep spiritual affiliation to her faith ensured she lived a good, healthy life. Vinnie, So sorry to hear about your mom. It is never easy to lose a loved one. Seemed like she lived a full and rewarding life and for that in itslef is wonderful. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sal, Linda, Nicholas, Max and Olivia.

Part III Continued The bookie did not pay off. The runner stated that either that they did not play, or played a different number. ( There were no receipts) Exclamations were exchange, but no payoff. After a couple of days, when the winnings were not paid; Connie and Mary decided to confront the bookie. At the end of their work day, they walked up Aleppo St. . , Crossed over Manton Av and stopped in front of a green bar. ( All men's bars had green fronts.) Woman were never allowed into a men's bar in those days, and I doubt Grandma would ever think of walking into it. They waited, and asked a patron to asked for the bookie to step outside. While my mother stood on the sidewalk, The runner and bookie stood on the steps of the Manton Avenue. Pub. The argument began again...  back and forth... .we played that winning number ;... ...  no you didn't... ... .. The bar emptied out. Men from the bar, laughing and snickering, joined the bookie on the top step, looking down at the two outraged female bettors. The payoff was made, however, when Connie and Mary played their final trump card. I wasn't there, but I understand Providence. I don't know who said it, but I know my mother received her $25.00 winnings. It went something like this. "If you don't payoff, we're going downtown to see Raymond." Dear Stephanie; Here's another Grandma story for your permanent collection. Sometime in the late fifties, early 60's Grandma worked with a Connie Paliotta from Union Av. They worked in an Olneyville factory on Aleppo St, next to the Atlantic Mills. Grandma made spoons for company run by Mr. Sabin. Sabin was a nice Jewish man, who always wore a white shirt and tie. Like all factories, it was brick. It was dark, dusty, hot and monotamous. The factories of Olneyville breathed gold, lead, mercury, and arsenic. The repetitive clanking of the foot presses made conversation difficult. The day was always broken up by talks about politics, sports and whatever things women talked about over in the early 60's. Did you know Granma was fervent supporter of the Civil Rights Movement? The Irish have always had natural affinity for the underdog.

Our sincere condolences to the family of my great aunt Mary who reside in America and to her brother Joe and her sister, my grandmother, Margaret who both reside here in Sligo, Ireland. i like to remember mary and my mom eva enjoying christmas eve at paul and linda's house talking, eating and having a lot oflaughs with santa clause[paul} telling him what they wanted for christmas. there were many happy memories !

My thoughts & prayers go out to the family. Mary was a very devoted parishioner of St. Anthony's and when I used to see her at Mass, she always had a smile and was a very sweet & classy woman. May God continue to bless her & her family, especially her loving daughter Brenda.

In memory of my dear Aunt Mary who was such a good friend to everybody. I loved my visits to see her when Iworked in New York in the late 80s. She was such a great historian and such a great cook My abiding memory of her was of the last time she came to visit Ireland on her last day Ifound her sitting in the garden early morning when I asked her what she was doing she said she was listening to the birds. I hope they are singing loudly for her in Heaven. Her sister Margaret is very sad at her passing but knowns she has gone to her heavenly reward May God grant rest to her gentle soul Marie and Margaret Kennedy Sligo Ireland
