

WEST WARWICK - MOLLOY, Miriam V., "Mimi", 80, of Pinewood Drive died Friday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center. She was the wife of the late David S. Molloy (Ret. Sgt. Prov. PD). They had been married for 55 years. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Virginia (Losea) Handy and Courtland Handy. She had lived in West Warwick for many years, previously living on Sinclair Avenue in Providence. She graduated from Classical High School in 1943, attended Pembroke College, and earned a schorlorship from Johns Hopkins University School of Engineering. As part of the program's World War II apprenticeship arrangement, she worked as a draftsman at the Glen Martin Aircraft Company in Baltimore. After marrying David, who was in the US Navy, she returned to Rhode Island as a draftsman for Brown & Sharpe in 1944. While raising two children she attended R.I. College, graduating cum laude in 1960, and earned a master's degree in mathematics there in 1963 with partial credit from a scholarship from Brown University. She studied under RIC's current president, John Nazarian. Miriam was the second of three generations to graduate from RIC. She taught at Cranston West High School for a year before beginning a twenty year teaching career at Mt. Pleasant High School in 1962, where she also trained student teachers. She belonged to the Providence Teachers Union, AFL-CIO. She loved foreign travel, liberal causes, family genealogy, and her pet cats. She is survived by her children, URI Professor Scott Molloy of West Kingston, and Jacqueline D. Hastings, an IT manager at Amica Insurance and Jacqueline's fiancAC. Joseph A. Igliozzi of Warwick. She also leaves her three beloved grandchildren Shannon Hastings and Kelsey and Cady Molloy. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8pm in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Rd., Warwick. Her funeral and burial will be private.
