Born in Providence, he was the son of the late William J. and Mary C. (Shiel) Donnelly. Paul shared an especially close and devoted bond with his mother, Mary, whom he deeply adored. He often quoted her words throughout his life, carrying her wisdom, humor, and guidance with him always.
Paul proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, where he worked as an X-ray technician. He took great pride not only in his service, but in training others in radiology, a role he embraced with patience, knowledge, and genuine pride in helping others learn. Following his military service, Paul went on to work with the United States Postal Service.
A lovely Irish man with a sharp wit and warm presence, Paul was known for his great sense of humor and his gift for conversation. He was a natural storyteller and an engaging conversationalist who genuinely enjoyed connecting with others. A man of broad interests and sharp intellect, Paul had a lifelong passion for horse racing and was remarkably fluent in Japanese; an unexpected talent that spoke to his curiosity and thoughtful engagement with the world around him.
Paul especially cherished holidays, with Thanksgiving and St. Patrick’s Day holding a special place in his heart, celebrations that reflected his love of tradition, family, and his Irish heritage.
Above all, Paul was devoted to his family and friends. He leaves behind his daughters, Mary Esser and Lisa Esser-Prior, and two grandchildren.
His funeral services and burial will be held privately.
