

Born in Evanston, Illinois, he was the son of the late James and Eleanore (Edwards) Devine.
Philip earned a BA from Yale University and his PhD in Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the faculty of Providence College in 1990, and retired in 2015, after 25 years of service. Philip is the author of the “The Ethics of Homicide” and several other books.
Besides his wife, Philip is survived by a brother, James Devine of Culver City, CA, a sister, Dorothy Devine of Peacedale, and several nephews and a niece. Philip was loved by all who knew him. He was an inspiring teacher and a loyal and faithful friend. He had a gift for recognizing people’s talent and encouraging them.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday March 3rd, 10 AM at St. Pius V. Church, Eaton St. Providence. Burial to follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
