

Born in the Bronx, a daughter of the late Irving and Lillian (Lankowitz) Priest, she moved with her young family to Rhode Island in 1967, first to East Greenwich and later to Providence. Before moving to RI she was a resident of Rockland County, NY.
Sandy received a bachelor’s degree in education in 1957 and a master’s degree in 1962 from New York University. Thereafter, she taught in the Yonkers public school system for 6 years before moving to Rhode Island.
In Providence, Sandy taught nursery school and senior adult programs at the Jewish Community Center. She was also involved in coordinating birthday parties for children.
She is survived by two children, Steven Bass of Pawtucket and Karen Bass of Bellevue, Washington; two grandchildren, Cooper and Marisol Valenzuela and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her late husband Hyman’s son, James Comen.
She was predeceased by her sister, Iris Finkelstein and her brother, William Priest.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 12:30 pm in Rhode Island Veteran’s Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter.
Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
