

East Greenwich, Rhode Island Sophia Sakalys, 86, of Phillips Road, died peacefully Sunday at the Scalabrini Villa Healthcare Center, North Kingstown. Born in Kaunas, Lithuania, she was displaced from her homeland during World War II and migrated to Toronto, Canada after the war where she married Vytautas Sakalys. They later moved to Long Island, New York and ultimately to Providence, RI. Mrs. Sakalys was a Medical Technologist at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, for twenty-nine years before retiring. Active in her Lithuanian heritage, Sophia was a Fourth degree member of the Knights of Lithuania, a Lithuanian Representative to the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission, and a long time parishioner of Saint Casimir Church, Providence. She leaves a sister, Marija Makackiene, in Lithuania where her late brother Isadorius Arbataitis also resided, a son, Victor R. Sakalys, and his wife Janet E. Sakalys, of Westborough, Massachusetts, and three loving grandchildren, Kristin Bythewood, Carolyn Sakalys and Julie Sakalys. The funeral will be held Saturday, at 10:00 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in Saint Casimir Church, 350 Smith Street, Providence. Burial will be in the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Putnam, Connecticut. Visiting hours Friday, 4 - 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, 600 Liberty Highway, Putnam, Connecticut 06260-2503 in her memory will be appreciated.
