

Mary D. Sullivan FMM died May 1, 2009 at Holy Family Community, Fruit Hill, North Providence, RI. The daughter of the late Robert and Clare ( Rodgers) Sullivan. from Medford, Mass. Born in Somerville, MA she lived in Medford graduating from Girl's Catholic High School Malden MA. After graduating she worked at the Second National Bank in Boston. For six years she was an active member of the Tributary Theatre of Boston. Sr. Mary entered the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in Sept. 16, 1946.After her novitiate at Fruit Hill she trained and worked as a practical nurse at St. Francis Hospital Roslyn, Long Island, NY. In February of 1956 Sr. Mary was missioned to Kobe, Japan where she taught seventh and eighth grades at Stella Mans International School. When the FMM opened a clinic in Pusan, Korea she was one of the founding Sisters and served as a nurse in the clinic. In 1961, Sr, Mary left for Rome, Italy where she worked in the Secretariat for the International Community during the Council years returning to the U.S. in August, 1967. She obtained her undergraduate and graduate degrees at R.I.C. her post graduate degrees at the University of Birmingham, Alabama in management and at R.I.C. in Gerontology. She taught two years at the Cardinal Cushing School in Hanover Mass and then became the first person to serve at the newly opened Apostolate for the Handicapped in Providence in the area of mental retardation. In the mid seventies Sr. Mary began working in the education department at the Dr. Joseph Ladd Center in Exeter, R.I. During these years she was also a member of the Sisters Senate, now known as the Council for Religious for the Diocese of Providence. After Sr. Mary retired from the Ladd Center in July 1990, she volunteered five years with R.I. Project Aids and for three years at The Genesis Center's E.S.L. program. She also worked for two years at St. Paul the Apostle in Foster, R.I. and for several years with theProvince Library's E.S.L. program Sr. Mary was a long time member of AAMD -Center of Concern -Pax Christi -Network. Sr. Mary is survived by her brothers and sisters: Bro. Robert Sullivan C.F.X.Melrose, MA-. Edward and Julie Sullivan Kericho, Kenya -Eugene and RosemarySullivan Winchester MA, Virginia and Robert Wilson Medford, MA Margaret andJerry Eisenhaur Stoneham, MA and Donald Sullivan Medford, Ma, twenty nieces andnephew and 23 grand nieces and nephews she is predeceased by Peggy Sullivan andJohnny Sullivan. Visiting hours will be Wednesday , May 6, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Wake Service at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Chapel, 399 Fruit Hill Avenue, North Providence, Mass of Christian Burial in the Holy Family Chapel Thursday, May 7, 2009. at 11 a.m .
