Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late John Sako and Margaret (Vento) Sako.
He was the father to Lauren Greene, Karen Simeone and her husband Jack, and Cheryl London and her husband Jon. He was the father-in-law to Joe Greene.
He also leaves behind three brothers, John, William, and George Sako.
Steve was known as “Pish” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a name which he greatly treasured. Pish treated each of his grandchildren uniquely to their character with a kind and gentle heart. Jack (Katie), Alanna, Stephen (Alberta), Timothy, Christopher (Alexandra), Jarred (Samantha), and Kylah all remember his playful manner and tender soul. Pish was also lucky enough to have known three great-grandchildren, Natalia, Lorenzo, and Luca. Up until the day Pish passed, he would ask, “How are those pretty kids doing?”.
Steve proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War. He enjoyed reminiscing about his time on the ship and the many places he visited. Repeating the same stories over and over again, as if he were telling them for the first time.
Pish is best remembered for his Sunday “gravy” which would simmer on the stove all day, and the big mess that went along with it. He was also a fun guy who was admired by many of the young people who were blessed enough to call him Pish – and lucky enough to learn his “secret” handshake. Pish will be missed by all.
Steve was a faithful member of St. Rocco’s Church in Johnston.
At the request of the family, funeral and burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stephen’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital @ www.stjude.org.
