Born in Providence, he was a son of the late William J. Sweeney and Barbara M. (Breen) Sweeney.
Billy was the beloved brother of Joseph L. Sweeney, Michael J. Sweeney, Ret. PPD (Michelle), Joanne M. Wittman (Bryan), Carolyn A. Sweeney and the late Daniel G. Sweeney. He was the loving uncle of Kaitlin E. Rekola (Michael), Joseph L. Jr, Ryan M., Justin P., and Christopher D. Sweeney, and Lindsay M. Wittman. He was also the great-uncle of three.
Billy was a proud graduate of La Salle Academy, Class of 1976. He had worked for the Coca-Cola Company for many years and was a lifelong passionate fan of Providence College Men’s Basketball and New England sports teams.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 4:00-7:00 pm with his funeral on Thursday at 9 a.m. in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. Pius V Church, 240 Eaton Street, Providence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.
