Y Jacob Schinazi

December 25, 1932January 29, 2020

SCHINAZI, Y JACOB, MD “Jack”, 87, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Helen Schinazi, MD of 56 years. Born in Cairo, Egypt, he was the son of the late Solomon and Renèe (Abadi) Schinazi.

He earned his medical degree from Cairo University, with post-graduate degrees and training in England and the United States. He was in private practice for many years, assistant professor at Brown University and Boston University. He served as president to the New England Ophthalmological Society (NEOS), as well as of the Rhode Island Ophthalmological Society. During his tenure at NEOS he created the Educational Trust Fund, one of his proudest contributions to the future of the field.

An old school physician, his profession was the gift of sight, yet his true gift was making each patient feel truly seen.

Known for his calming presence, and welcoming, gentle soul, he was always an entirely present listener, rich with meaningful pearls shared at the right moment. Loved by all who knew him, he will be dearly missed.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons Alan Schinazi and his wife Bre Goldsmith and Robert Schinazi and his wife Lauren DeRosset; sister Laurette Galapo; and grandson Robert Jacob Schinazi.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to The New England Ophthalmological Society's Educational Trust Fund, http://www.neos-eyes.org/Donations.

I was a medical student under Dr. Schinazi in the late 1970s. He was the most kind and compassionate human being you could ever know. My only regret is that I opted for a different specialty other than ophthalmology.

I was sitting at my computer when I suddenly decided to type in the names of Doctors Helen and Y. Jacob Schinazi. I hadn't seen my former employers since they were kind enough to attend the services of my late husband in 2001. The date that I was at the computer was January 29. There was a brief notice of "Dr. Jack's" passing but not a full obituary as yet. How uncanny. Certainly not what I expected to see.
My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

Dr Jack was my role model for entering my career in ophthalmology. He supported me from the very moment I expressed an interest in ophthalmology. Dr. Jack was exceptionally kind to me and treated me like a son. I will never forget his kindness and support during the early times of my career in ophthalmology. I will always have very fond memories of Dr. Jack. I had the utmost respect for Dr Jack.
He was a caring and exceptionally gracious physician, beloved by many. The endless kind memories he left behind will be kept to heart by many patients, friends, and loved ones.
