Alice Marie Mestas, 87, passed away August 18, 2018. She was born in Huerfano County’s infamous “La Casa Larga” in Walsenburg to Mary and Sevedeo-Jose Duran. As a child Alice’s family lived in Fort Garland and throughout the San Luis Valley. Her maternal and paternal grandmother’s (Grandma Fina and Grandma Nita) were instrumental in raising Alice and her siblings, as were their Aunt Molly and Uncle Edward Sanchez. Alice, as did her siblings, began working in her early teens while attending school. Alice worked at the Pueblo army Depot (PADS) from her teen years until her retirement. She was honored many times throughout her PAD career. She married Alfonso Mestas and a few years later gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Kathy. Alice and her siblings, Freda, Eddie, Arnold, and Jerry were very close and being the eldest, she became the matriarch of her family. Alice traveled throughout the southwest and northwestern states with her surrogate parents, Auntie Molly and Uncle Eddie. In later years, with Auntie Molly and Uncle Walter, Alice visited the southeastern states and loved Washington, D.C. best! Kathy, Alice’s daughter and her many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friend will miss her. Alice was a confidant to all who were in her life. May Alice rest in peace. She is preceded in death by her husband, Alfonso, siblings Frieda and Arnold. Alice is survived by her brothers Eddie (Dorothy) Duran and Jerry (Gabriel) Duran+, daughter Kathy, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A viewing will be Friday, August 24, at 9 am at Imperial funeral Home. Graveside service will be Friday at 10 am at Imperial Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
