Born in Norman, Oklahoma, Anne was the daughter of Nicholas E. Comfort and Esther Ellen Obee Comfort. She met Clay in their first year of medical school and they were married at the end of that year. They graduated from the University of Oklahoma Medical school in 1951. She and Clay moved to Pueblo in 1958 where Clay opened his own dermatology practice and Anne joined the staff of the Colorado State Hospital as a staff psychiatrist and later as a division supervisor from 1958 until 1970. She then had her own private practice until 1986. She returned to work at the re-named Colorado Health Institute at Pueblo in the forensic unit until 1992. Clay and Anne were married for 57 years.
A woman of many talents, Anne got her pilots license to support Clay in his love of flying and was a very competent camp cook for the many weekends that the family spent exploring the mountains in their trusty Scout. She canned the vegetables Clay grew in his gardens and designed and sewed Halloween costumes for the kids every year.
Anne was a member of Community of Christ Church, and in later years was active in the League of Women Voters, Healthcare for All Colorado, and Mental Health America of Pueblo from which she received the Robert Hawkins award for career achievements in the mental health community. One of Anne’s proudest achievements was the creation of the Big Hill Open Space, a project she and Clay worked on for several years, applying for grants and coordinating with the city planners. This dream was finally realized in 1999. Daily walks out to the end of Big Hill and being able to watch the varied wildlife (road runners and quail, sparrows and finches, foxes and deer) out her back window were always a special joy for her. She enjoyed her family and friends, reading, gardening, knitting and crocheting and observing nature. She will be remembered for her community involvement and activism, patience, listening skills, gentle smile and sense of humor. She was always ready to help family and friends and enjoyed entertaining.
She is survived by children Karen Dunn (Steve), C. Alan Courtright (Saralynn), Debra Burnham (Dusty), Janet Ross (Glen), 7 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She is the last of her generation in her family.
A memorial time will be held on July 8 at her home, 2109 7th Avenue in Pueblo, in the form of an Open House from 1pm to 4pm. This will include a period of reflection and sharing (Quaker meeting style) from 2pm to 3pm.
