The 2024 CSUP Baseball season is almost here, less than 2 weeks away. I will be sitting in the stands as often as I possibly can, occupying a seat for you. Thinking of you today and every day.

Uncle Art was my Hero❣️
      Although he wasn’t really our uncle he always treated us as his nieces. He was my dads old Navy buddy and through the years would often visit and vice versa and every time we did something special.  He’d spoil us and bought us some kind of souvenir wherever we went. We would go to the San Francisco Giants games and I’m pretty sure I got my love for baseball from him.  Whenever we would go out to eat he’d make me feel like a princess and order me a Shirley Temple. Every year he’d send us a present for Christmas and I was always so excited when it came in the mail! I think the best memory was when he had us come to his house one summer when I was 12. He built us our own room in the basement. he showed me how to feed all his roosters which seemed like rows and rows of pins and I would get up really early and feed them every morning. I yearned to make him proud. He had a garden and taught me how to pick corn and freeze chilies. He bought us passes to the fair so when he went to work, we went to the fair. He gave us $20 a day and I felt rich!! And I won a big cigar for him. He loved cigars and when he was told to quit smoking them he chewed them. He took me to the livestock auction and wowed me when he bid on them. He took us to see Tony Orlando and Dawn playing at the fair and some local baseball games. I think he took us somewhere every night. Funny things I’ll always remember he did was grab my knee and squeeze with his fingers to make it tickle and he always whistled at the mariachis. I wrote a letter to him once telling him thank you for all the things he did for me and how special he made me feel growing up and he told me after he read it he thought he could walk on water 😂 he always had a good joke 😜.  If I only did half the things my Uncle did I’d be proud!! Thank you for being my uncle, Uncle Art. I love you and you will forever be in my heart.

Mr.  Gonzales ( as I always referred to him in my youth) was my next door neighbor during my formative years from 1965 when I was 2  until I left for Engineering school at CSU (Ft Collins) in 1981 at the age of 18. He was a good friend to my parents long after that .  He always saw something special in me and we talked over the fence about school frequently over the years. Two special memories about Art:

1.  Every Halloween during my elementary school days,  in the 60s and 70's either Art or his father would prepare a special , separate  Halloween bag just for me  and he would call me to the front of the line when he opened the door and invite me in to get my own candy bag custom made for me.  Since parents had just begun checking their kid's bags for razor blades and such, this special  bag gave my parents confidence that at least this one didn't need to be checked and I was allowed immediate access to it. 

2. Mr. Gonzales and I shared a love for baseball.  I played all the way from the "Old Timers" little leagues through HS as an infielder at South High School. In the early years as neighbors during the spring and summer, he would play catch with me over the fence  and sometimes invite me to "hop" the fence and he would hit grounders to me on his big gravel back yard surface . He never took it easy on me either and used to rip some serious shots my way. That certainly was appreciated as I made several Pueblo league teams and all- star teams at SS and 3rd base .   I think He would be proud of me today . He saw great potential in me . Between he and my parents and other good neighbors, the old saying , "It takes a village to raise a child " was upheld. Mr. Gonzales was a quiet yet influential roll model to  whom I am greatly blessed to have known in my formative years.

Our condolences to the Gonzales family on the loss of Art. We were neighbors for over 30 years and we were proud to consider him a longtime friend.

Artis preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers Andy, Bob, Ernie, Junior; and his sister Sophie Flores.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine and her two sons; special nephew Ricky Gonzales and many other nephews, nieces and other relatives
