She was born on August 4, 1952, in Salida, Colorado, to Norman and Mary Eggleston. She grew up on the family farm, graduated from Salida High School in 1970, and went on to earn her teaching degree from Adams State College.
Betty began her teaching career in Walsenburg, where she taught for two years and, through a coworker, met the love of her life, Bob Jones. The two were married and shared 48 wonderful years together. In 1982, they moved to the Beulah Valley, where they raised their two children. As her children grew older, Betty returned to the classroom, first as a substitute teacher for 11 years and later as the 5th grade teacher at Beulah School for another decade. She was a beloved educator who touched the lives of countless students with her kindness, patience, and love for learning.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She deeply cherished her role as a wife, mother to William and MaryClara, and grandmother to Brody and Gentry Jones. She found immeasurable joy in her grandchildren, whether traveling with them or simply watching them grow into the people they are today.
After retirement, she and her husband explored the country in their fifth-wheel camper, creating lasting memories on the road. At home, she delighted in planning new trips, playing the piano, exploring her family’s genealogy, canning and reading cookbooks and books about Ireland. This past spring, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of traveling to Ireland with her daughter and sisters, Patricia and Emily—a trip she cherished deeply.
She is survived by her husband, her children, their spouses (Renee and Kenny), her grandchildren, her mother, her brothers, Albert and Stephen, sisters Patricia, Emily and Margaret and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, her bonus mom Clara Jones (mother-in-law), and her father-in-law Howard Jones.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center or Sangre de Cristo Hospice in her honor. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the many friends and relatives who offered support, as well as to the compassionate medical staff at MD Anderson, Rocky Mountain Cancer Center and Sangre de Cristo Hospice.
Her strength, positive attitude, kindness, and devotion to family will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew her.
