Born in Pueblo, Colorado, he was the son of Amada Gustamante. He attended Central High School, graduated in 1954, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1959. He worked at the CF&I from 1959-1964, the Pueblo Army Depot from 1964-1973, serving as a civil servant in Korea in 1969, and the State of Colorado 10th Judicial District as a Probation Officer from 1973-1995 until his retirement. Dan graduated from Southern Colorado State College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973.
He married Virginia Bueno on August 8, 1964, and they were married for 35 years before Virginia passed away in 1999. Dan was then blessed with a second marriage to Josie Garcia on September 30, 2000.
Dan is survived by his wife, Josie Gustamante; his children Phill (Ibby) Gustamante and Amanda Mestas (John Dazzio); Josie’s children, Earl (Lisa) Garcia, Susie (George) Lipyance, and Edward (and Johnnie) Garcia; his grandchildren Nathan and Macey (Adam Carter) Gustamante, Mykayla (Nic Gurule) and Marlo (Trent Fair) Mestas; and his three great-granddaughters, Olivia, Rosie, and Murphy - all of whom will miss him more than he could ever know.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia; his mother, Amada Gustamante; and his siblings, Nellie Wyatt, John Gustamante, Betty Finley, and Rudy Gustamante.
When he was a member of First Baptist Church, he was involved in mission work to assist the homeless population in Pueblo. He was most recently a member at Parkhill Baptist Church.
Dan shared that his greatest achievement was accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and wanting to serve Him with all his heart, something he shared with everyone he visited.
Funeral services, with military honors, will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Parkhill Baptist Church, with Pastor Douglas Cox officiating.
