Darlene Romero, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, kindness, and grace. Born on July 27, 1952, in Mountain View, Missouri, to Jesse and Zelma Owens. Darlene spent much of her childhood moving between Missouri and Walden, Colorado — though Colorado was always the place she loved and considered home.
Throughout her life, Darlene faced many trials and hardships, yet she carried herself with dignity, resilience, and quiet strength. She had a light-hearted spirit that brought comfort and joy to those around her, and she never hesitated to offer kindness, compassion, and generosity to everyone she met.
Darlene started her college education in her 40s and earned a Master’s degree in Special Education from Regis University. She was a Preschool Special Education teacher in District 60, where she was known for her patience, warmth, and genuine care for all the children, and was loved and respected by her fellow teammates and staff members.
Outside of her work, Darlene’s greatest joys were found close to home. She was a collector of beautiful and interesting things — each piece a reflection of her curious spirit and eye for beauty. Her beloved dogs were constant companions, and her yard was her sanctuary. She spent countless happy hours tending to her flowers, having a special love for her Chinese peonies. Above all else, family was the center of her world, and the love she gave so freely will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Her presence brought warmth, laughter, and comfort, and the void left by her passing is one that can never truly be filled.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Zelma Owens; her brother, Jesse Lee Owens; and her beloved son, Raymond Finley. She is survived by the love of her life and devoted husband of 26 years, Raymundo Romero; her daughter, Angelina (Dan) Neilson; her stepson, Mike Romero; her grandchildren, Brandon Neilson and Brittney Neilson; and her step-grandsons, Jayden and Randy Romero, along with many extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.
We, as a family, could not have asked for a better wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. We will forever treasure the memories, love, and laughter she shared with us, and hope to see her again in Paradise where we know she will be waiting.
A celebration of Darlene’s life will be held at Imperial Memorial Gardens, 5450 Highway 78 West, Pueblo, CO 81005, on June 5, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
