Dorothy was born in Walsenburg, Colorado, and took great pride in being a farm girl. She graduated from Huerfano High School before moving to Pueblo, Colorado, to raise a family and find employment. Dorothy was an ambitious young lady, working at the Pueblo Army Depot for 20 years, then transferring to the United States Postal Service where she worked for 13 years until her retirement. Whether she was caring for those in need or dishing out lunches to students in District 60, Dorothy didn't just "work"—she connected. She had a natural ability to make everyone she met feel like family, always keeping an extra plate ready for anyone who stopped by. She was also a very active member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #19, until its closing.
Dorothy had a heart of gold and enjoyed caring for others, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a special place in her heart for her great-grandson Lucas, who would visit often and keep her company. Dorothy was never happier than when she was in her yard, tending to her roses and other plants. An avid animal lover, her home was a haven for every creature, great and small. If a dog needed a home or a bird needed a meal, Dorothy was the first to answer the call. Her last loyal companion, who stayed by her side or in her lap, was her dog, Dukie.
Dorothy lived a busy, full, and caring life and passed peacefully in her sleep at the age of 91. She is now reunited with her husband, Bernie, and her beloved son, Mark, whom she missed dearly. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mucio and Ann Manzanares, grandparents Jose & Florence Espinoza, and Florita Naranjo, and her sister Frances Guerrero.
She leaves to celebrate her life her beloved son Kevin (Veronica) Gallegos, Jim (Teresa) Manzanares; grandchildren Divina (Tyler) Gallegos, Andrew Lopez, Shaun (Tiffany) Manzanares, Tad (Melissa) Manzanares, Jason (Mary) Montelongo Gallegos, Damien (Brandi) Montelongo Gallegos, and numerous great-grandchildren; siblings Ruth Alcon, Ann Vigil, and Leonard (Kay) Manzanares, and her special friend and companion, Ed Martinez.
All services will be held at Imperial Memorial Gardens, 5450 CO-78, Pueblo, CO on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Burial and a reception will immediately follow.
