

Elwin M. (Sonny) Hood, our dearly beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and friend to many, went home to our Lord and Savior on May 10, 2021. He was born in Pueblo, Colorado on May 20, 1937 to Walter Preston and Florence Nadine Hood.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Virginia (Richardson) Hood, son Greg (Lynita) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Granddaughter Stephanie (Luke) Hopken of Ellijay, Georgia; great granddaughters Bailey and Savanna. Grandson Joshua (Alexis)of Lincoln, Nebraska and great granddaughters Loxley and Copper. Son Mike (Trina) of Pueblo West, Colorado; Granddaughter Morgan (Hector) Herrera of Pueblo West, Colorado and Granddaughter Brandee (Tristan) of Pueblo West, Colorado. Sonny is also survived by his sister Barbara (Bobby) Morgan of Pueblo, Colorado, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and hundreds of friends.
His primary vocation was in the electrical trade. He and Virginia started Hood Electric in Rye, Colorado, in the early 1970’s. Sonny was well known, having played country music in and around the Southern Colorado region for more than 65 years. He enjoyed writing music and had several albums produced. He wrote a song “I can call this home” for his good friend who was a longtime forest ranger, Jack Wachob. Sonny was a member of the Colorado Country Music Association and was the first inductee into their Hall of Fame. He received an Award at the North America Country Music Associations International for his Patriotic song “Eagle on the Fly”. For more than 16 years, he played twice a month at the VA home in Walsenburg. He served on various civic boards, including a member on the Rye Fire Protection Board for many years and was an integral part of Greenhorn Valley Days and the Rye/Colorado City Saddle Club.
Sonny attended the Rye Home United Methodist Church and loved singing often on Sundays and for many special occasions and events.
Sonny had always said how much he loved his family, friends and the Greenhorn Valley. A celebration of Sonny’s life will be announced at some time in the near future.
