

Helen M. Gonzales, 89, of Pueblo, Colo., went to be with her heavenly Father on Sept. 18, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose E. Gonzales; parents, Apolonio and Lucy Chavez; and brother, Robert Chavez. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Edward (Amy) Gonzales and Michael (Julie) Gonzales; grandchildren, Georgia (Tucker) Gove, Christine (Mark) Gonzales Shifflet, Sarah (Justin) Baca, Maya (Cody) Crump and Sammy Earp; brother, Apolonio Chavez Jr.; close nieces, Evelyn (Dennis) Mondragon, Lori Estrada; five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews; and many special friends including Jeanette (Zane) Grant, Rose and Larry Hicks and Georgia Capra. She was born Aug. 9, 1936, in Albuquerque, N.M. She married Jose and raised her two children in Pueblo, Colo. Helen started a long public service career as a nurse in a medical office, went on to receive a BSW (USC) and a MSW (DU) and then worked as a supervisor and trainer of caseworkers in various units of the Department of Social Services for 17+ years. After retiring from DSS, she continued her dedicated service to families as a consultant and trainer to other social service agencies and as a therapist for elderly in nursing homes. Her own family always came first. The holidays were filled with love and laughter and great food. She enjoyed traveling, scrapbooking, shopping for great finds, and dancing with her beloved Jose. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Services for Helen will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, at St. Joseph's Catholic Parish. 1145 S Aspen Rd, Pueblo, CO 81006.
