Kenneth W. McCabe died January 26, 2015. Born in Pueblo to Kenneth and Priscilla McCabe, he is survived by his wife Linda and three children: Jennifer P. McCabe (Los Angeles), Kenneth W. McCabe, Jr. with wife Jennifer Taylor and 2 grandsons Kenneth W. and Sorren McCabe (Berkeley, CA), and William Bradford McCabe (Mt. Gambier, South Australia).
Raised in Pueblo, Ken attended Thatcher School and Centennial High where he was active in student government, lettered in football, basketball and baseball, and where he was student body president in 1954. He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire in 1958 with a BA in Economics.
He was commissioned in the US Navy and served as Combat Information Officer on a small radar ship out of Pearl Harbor, HI, and later as Security Officer at the US Naval Training Center, San Diego CA. (He did not miss the sea!)
Ken worked for 5 years for H. W. Houston Construction Co., and later managed a concrete forming company in New Mexico. In 1969 he joined Boettcher & Company as an Account Executive in their Pueblo office. He was later promoted to Manager. In 1979 Boettcher sent Ken to Albuquerque to establish and manage the firm’s presence in NM, building the office to 15 Account Executives. His last position at Boettcher was in the Retail Administrative headquarters in Denver at which time the firm had grown to over 23 offices in 10 Western states in addition to Colorado. He retired in 1987.
Over the years, Ken served on several Boards including El Pueblo Boys’ and Girls’ Ranch, Pueblo Country Club, Chairman of the Club addition and renovation project in 2002, and was a member of the Pueblo Planning & Zoning commission.
Survivors include sisters Marilyn Gower (Mrs. Ansel) Pueblo and Martha Elliott (Mrs. Warren G.) Denver. Predeceased by sister Priscilla Hatton (Mrs. Wm. H.) Los Angeles. Also survived by wife’s 2 sons, Scott Tilton (Pueblo) and Drew Tilton and wife Emily and 2 granddaughters, MacKenzie and Reese (Greeley), and the mother of his 3 children Gay Prudence McCabe (Portland, OR).
Ken enjoyed golf, his golfing buddies, and socializing with friends, neighbors and a wide array of acquaintances. Gregarious by nature, he had a great sense of humor, could tell a story with the best of them. He and Linda spent summers at their cabin at Cuerna Verde in Rye where they loved to entertain guests. In his last days he was surrounded by supportive family and friends, the people he always preferred to be with and among.
A memorial service and celebration will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, January 31 at Ascension Episcopal Church.
