Mahlon Thatcher Everhart III “Terry” passed peacefully surrounded by family on March 15, 2026, in Pueblo, Colorado at age 82. Born September 6, 1943, in El Paso, Texas, Terry was preceded in death by his mother and father, Suzanne Johnson Everhart, Mahlon Thatcher Everhart, Jr. and his brother William “Bill” Everhart. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joy Ann Chisholm Everhart, son, Mahlon T. Everhart IV,” Tatt” (Veronica) of Las Cruces, New Mexico and daughter Stacy Voss (Daryl) of Pueblo, Colorado. His favorite people were his grandchildren; Connor, Mahlon, Morgan, Asher, Josiah, and DeAnza. Loving sisters Barbara Everhart and Jouett Smith also survive him as well as nieces Caroline, Barbara, Suzanna, and nephew Josh.
Terry grew up on a ranch near Hachita, New Mexico learning to ride, rope and curse in two languages from cowboys north and south of the border. He met the love of his life and future wife Joy in middle school. He was late for his first day of class in a new school, and Joy was asked to escort him to the principal's office. The rest is a beautiful love story.
He was a wrestler in high school and at Cornell University. He earned his degree in agricultural sciences from University of Arizona and moved to Colorado to manage family ranches. He was loyal to his family, friends, and horses, in that order. His passion was team roping and the comradery between cowboys.
Terry treated the land and livestock with respect. He was a member of New Mexico Businessmen’s Team Roping Association, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and Pikes Peak Range Riders. He proudly served on Sangre de Cristo and State Habitat Partnership Program Committees under Colorado Parks and Wildlife. He was honored with the 1999 Wildlife Landowner of the Year and 2022 Land Steward of the year by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
