On June 18th, 1936, Mary Baca came into the world and was christened as Maria Amparo Diaz. Born and raised in Pueblo, CO, she was the 10th of twelve siblings. She graduated from Central High School in 1955 and married Gilbert Baca in 1957. Together, they traveled extensively throughout the country and abroad, eventually residing in Colorado Springs, CO.
Her love of reading and learning inspired her to further her education, working toward a major in Psychology with a minor in Political Science. Deeply civic-minded, Mary loved volunteering for many different causes, including the League of Women Voters (LWV), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Military Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), the local library and as a dental assistant. Throughout her career, Mary worked at the Avalon Movie Theater and Candy’s/Mission Tortillas in Pueblo, and she was also the beloved lunchroom cashier at Carmel Jr. High School in Colorado Springs for many years.
Mary stayed physically active throughout much of her life, participating in softball, bowling, dancing and working out at the gym. Her hobbies included painting ceramics, reading, and serving in the Catholic Church. Her love of music led to an impressive media collection spanning many genres. She also had a passion for history; whenever the family traveled, she made sure everyone learned about the historic roots of the places they visited.
Mary will be remembered for her strength, willfulness, mentorship, and sense of humor, often unable to finish her own jokes because she was already laughing before the punchline was said. Mary took pride in her appearance, always wearing the latest in fashion. She was incredibly youthful, often being mistaken for her daughters’ sister rather than their mother. She will also be remembered for her delicious homemade tortillas, chicken soup, roast, and enchiladas.
Mary passed away peacefully on September 26th, 2026. She leaves behind her eldest daughter, Janet Baca; her son, Gilbert Baca Jr. (Diana); and her youngest daughter, Cheryl Messerschmidt (Eric). She is survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert, numerous brothers and sister’s; and extended family members.
