Mike Gilbert Madrid, born September 6, 1955, passed away on May 17, 2026 in Pueblo, Colorado, surrounded by the family who loved him beyond measure. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, he left this world with the same strength, humor, and stubborn determination that defined his life. As a man of pure unwavering faith, he is now in heaven, finally at peace.
Mike was married to his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Elaine. For fifty-one years, they built a partnership on loyalty, laughter, trust and unshakeable devotion. Together they raised their daughters, his “Daddy’s girls,” Aubrey Vialpando (Paul Vialpando) and Vanessa Madrid (J.R. Chavez). They were the pride of his life. His joy and heart was expanded with his granddaughters Peyton and Avery Vialpando. He was close to his sister-in-law Patsy Rodrigues (Adam Rodrigues), and his brother-in-law Kenny Sanchez (Kathy Sanchez). He is also survived by sisters, Lucy Montoya (Matt Montoya) and Clara Solano. His nieces and nephews were Andrew Rodrigues, Amanda Rodrigues, Devin Sanchez, Shelby Sanchez, Michael Paul Zamora, Charles Solano III, and Christopher Solano. His dear childhood friends remained by his side into adulthood, Rocky Quintana (Cathey Quintana) and Abran Martinez (Darlene Martinez). He is preceded in death by his parents, Remijio and Mary Madrid, his brother-in-law Chuck Solano and nephew Chad Solano.
Mike was a man of many passions; music, movies, toys, collectables, and sports were woven into the fabric of his life. Whether he was sharing a favorite song, quoting a movie line, going antiquing, or intently staring at the TV during a game, he brought comfort and joy to everything he loved. His humor was quick, his presence comforting, and his ability to make people laugh and feel seen stayed with him even in the hardest moments of his illness.
He impacted so many people in the community through his jobs. He was a Case Manager at El Pueblo Boys and Girls Ranch for thirty years as well as a bus driver for District 70. He drove his granddaughters to school for seven years. Many took joy in seeing Mike as an Usher at Memorial Hall where he established great friendships.
He will be tremendously missed by all who knew and loved him. His strength never left him. His love never will.
