Susan Bradfield-Askey was a Pueblo native and National Jury Award-Winning Artist. She was born on May 22, 1948 and went to Heaven on May 21, 2024. A talented self-taught, mixed-media artist, she was every bit as passionate about people as she was her artwork. Her love for animals and everything southwest inspired her artwork from a young age. She loved taking walks and always found treasures like stones or pieces of driftwood that she used for inspiration. Her works included original watercolor, paper collage and sculpture. She also enjoyed travel and was a flight attendant for United Airlines. She traveled to England, Italy, France and South Africa with her family. The culture, people and animals inspired her way of life.
Her happiest days were spent with her husband Jim on their cattle ranch near Beulah watching sunsets and herding cows. Family always came first and she enjoyed every excuse to celebrate each member with special dinners, cakes and balloons. She never knew a stranger and was known for inviting Amazon and Fedex delivery drivers to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, anyone she thought might be alone. She always kept blankets in the car during winter months and water bottles in summer months to give to anyone in need.
She came to Christianity later in life and was baptized with her daughter Jill at Pueblo Christian Center on September 10, 2023. Her faith became a focal point for her and she looked forward to spending eternity with Jesus.
She is preceded in death by the love of her life, husband (James Askey) and leaves behind two children (Eric and Jill Ryan), sister (Audrey Rheuff), brother (Dr. John Bradfield), nieces and nephews (Stacey Bennett, Avery Orcutt, Bridger Bennett, Connor and Sarah Bradfield and Justin and Carly Bradfield).
A private service will be held with family later this summer. Donations can be made in Susan’s memory to PAWS animal shelter or Southern Colorado Spay-Neuter Clinic in Pueblo.
