Anne Newing was born on October 22, 1929 and raised in Coulsdon, Surrey, England. She was evacuated to a country school during the war. Blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and a commanding stage presence, she began performing in the late 1940s and quickly became a leading lady, taking part in several amateur productions. She joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service in 1951 where she met then-Lieutenant Tony Newing at a friend’s wedding. They were married a year later on January 2, 1954.
As Tony progressed up the ranks of the Royal Navy they enjoyed duty assignments in Malta, England, Scotland and Belgium while raising their children, Christine and Steven. They didn’t suspect that their first assignment in the United States would eventually lead to an American son- and daughter-in-law and American citizenship.
Throughout her life, Anne was an active volunteer for several military charities and local hospitals.
In retirement they were active in Gilbert and Sullivan productions and Anne produced many of the costumes and scenery. As longtime sailors on the Chesapeake Bay, they purchased a series of increasingly bigger sailboats in which they would eventually cruise to the Bahamas with a flotilla of friends each winter. They moored their boat and settled in Burnt Store Marina when the onset of Anne’s Huntington’s disease made these cruises impractical.
She and Tony have been members of Burnt Store Presbyterian Church since 1997, where they have both been active volunteers. Her strong Christian faith and sunny, optimistic outlook saw her through a remarkable 30 years of Huntington’s and 67 anniversaries with Tony, which in recent years have been celebrated with their growing family. This former WREN was promoted to Paradise on May 27, with beloved family by her side. She is survived by Tony, brother John, Christine and Steven, their spouses, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. “The strife is o’er, the battle won.”
