James Anthony Nigel Morley

James Anthony Nigel Morley, beloved husband, father, cousin, friend, mentor, and colleague, passed away peacefully at home in Punta Gorda, Florida, on August 2, 2026, surrounded by love, after an extraordinarily courageous battle with cancer. He was 55 years old.

Born on February 24, 1971, in Vienna, Austria, James was the son of Nigel John Morley, a British diplomat, and Lillias Davidson Mill, both of whom predeceased him. His father’s diplomatic career gave James an exceptional international upbringing, with childhood years spent in Vienna, Hanoi, West Berlin, Ankara, and London. Those experiences shaped a man who was endlessly curious about the world, adaptable, and able to form lifelong friendships wherever life took him.

James attended Brightlands Preparatory School in Dulwich, London, before continuing his education at The King’s School, Canterbury. After a gap year, he began studying Economics at the University of Edinburgh before transferring to the London School of Economics (LSE), where he graduated with Honors.

From an early age, James knew he wanted a career in investment banking. Through remarkable intellect, unwavering determination, and quiet humility, he fulfilled that ambition beyond his dreams. He began his career with Goldman Sachs, before moving on to Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank. His first senior leadership role came with Morgan Stanley in London, where he became a Director before relocating to Singapore, where he was promoted to Managing Director. He later transferred to New York with Morgan Stanley before joining J.P. Morgan, where he served as Managing Director, Global Head of Derivatives and Agency Collateral.

While James was immensely proud of his professional achievements, he was even prouder of the people he helped along the way. He believed in mentoring young talent, encouraging others to succeed, and leading with integrity. He earned the respect of colleagues throughout the industry and was frequently published in financial journals and quoted in the international financial press.

It was in Singapore that James met the love of his life, Harriet. Introduced through mutual colleagues in the financial industry, a friendship gradually became a partnership that would define the rest of his life. They were married in a joyful celebration in Bali in 2014, surrounded by family and friends.

Together they later moved to New York, where their daughter, Chloe, was born. Her arrival inspired James and Harriet to rethink what mattered most. After years of demanding international careers, they chose a different path, one centered on family, community, and building a life together.

In 2019 they moved to Punta Gorda, Florida, where they purchased Charlotte Plumbing in nearby Port Charlotte. James embraced this new chapter with the same determination that had defined every stage of his life. Immersing himself in an entirely new profession, he earned his Florida Master Plumber’s License in 2023 and took immense pride in helping grow a business that served its community with honesty, professionalism, and care. Together, James and Harriet guided the company through the challenges of COVID-19, an unprecedented building boom, and three major hurricanes, including Hurricane Ian.

Above every professional accomplishment, James’s greatest pride and greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband to Harriet and a loving father to Benjamin, Pippa, and Chloe. He delighted in sharing his passions with his children, whether introducing Chloe to music from every genre imaginable, building Lego and intricate model aircraft together, discussing history, or keeping up with the latest sporting news with Benjamin, a connection they both treasured. Family was always at the center of his world.

James also treasured the friendships he built throughout his extraordinary life. Despite living across Europe, Asia, and the United States, he maintained lifelong friendships that spanned decades. His cousin, Simon, was far more than family; he was the brother James never had, and their bond remained unbreakable throughout their lives. His dear friends Guy and Richard, whom he met as teenagers while living in Turkey, remained among his closest companions for more than forty years, with his close friends Adrien and Lisa being his partners in fun for over 25 years.

To know James was to know a man of quiet intelligence, integrity, and kindness. He possessed a wonderfully dry British sense of humor and wit that often caught people by surprise. Friends loved to tease him about his meticulous planning, his attention to detail, and the way so many conversations began with the words, “I’ve been thinking…” They knew that what followed would be a carefully considered thought or solution, because James never did anything by half measures. He was thoughtful, analytical, endlessly curious, and always wanted to understand how things worked. Yet beneath that methodical exterior was a man who loved to laugh, dance, sing karaoke, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

He found his greatest peace sitting on the dock with a fishing rod in hand, especially during shark season, watching cricket, football, rugby, or Formula 1 with friends, enjoying fish and chips or a good curry in a traditional English pub, or escaping with Harriet to a quiet beach where they could simply read, relax, and enjoy each other’s company.

James was also a passionate student of history, fascinated by military strategy and the events that shaped the world. His remarkable fine-scale models of historic aircraft and ships reflected both his extraordinary patience and his appreciation for craftsmanship.

Although cancer ultimately claimed his life, it never defined him. Throughout his illness, James faced every challenge with remarkable courage, resilience, dignity, and quiet determination. He remained, above all else, a loving husband, devoted father, loyal friend, mentor, and a source of strength for those around him.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Harriet; his cherished children, Benjamin, Pippa, and Chloe; his cousin, Simon; countless lifelong friends around the world; and an extended family of colleagues, neighbors, and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

James lived a life of purpose, curiosity, and adventure. From the son of a British diplomat to the heights of international finance, from New York boardrooms to building a family business in Southwest Florida, he embraced every chapter with intelligence, humility, and unwavering integrity. Yet of all the roles he held, those he treasured most were husband, father, and friend.

He leaves behind a legacy not measured by titles or achievements, but by the love he gave, the friendships he nurtured, the lives he touched, and the family he adored.

As James would tell Chloe every night before bed, “I love you to the moon and back… infinity times.” Though he is no longer with us in person, that love, and the example he set through a life so well lived, will remain with all who knew and loved him, forever.
