It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of John F. McCourt of Punta Gorda, Florida (Formerly Westbury, NY). The son of Jane Hahn and Frank McCourt, he left us on July 28, 2024. John was 84 years old. Surrounded by his loving wife Claire and three children Kevin, Susanne, and John in his final hours, he was a man of humor, wisdom, and consummate storytelling.
John was born on May 7, 1940, in Queens, NY to Jane and Frank. He was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School in Jamaica. He joined and proudly served in the Marine Corps before marrying Claire Gombar on August 18, 1962, at St. Mary’s Church in Flushing, NY. John and Claire raised their family in Westbury, NY and lived in Winhall, VT for several years before ultimately moving to Punta Gorda, FL.
John had a successful career in transportation and logistics, most notably as a Vice President of Transportation for Coastal Oil. He was an active member of the New York Oil Heat Association and was instrumental in influencing many safety regulations. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles lodges.
Nicknamed “Big John” by his friends and family, he was larger than life. He had a full and wonderful life and most enjoyed traveling with his beloved Claire, spending time with his grandchildren and riding his Harley. Everyone who knows him well can remember countless stories that start with “Oh my God I remember a time when…”, some of which are probably best not repeated!! John left a lasting impression and made friends everywhere he went. People loved to visit him and share his passion for Harley Davidsons, fast boats, and muscle cars.
John is survived by his wife Claire, his children Kevin (m. Andrea) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Susanne (m. Rob) of Southford, NY; and John (m. Lois) of Naples, FL. He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren; Tyler, Andrew, Thomas, Paige, Sean, Matthew, Cameron, and Molly; as well as his beloved dog, Mike.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 16th, at 1:00pm at St. Katharine Drexel Church at 1922 ST 20th Ave in Cape Coral, FL. Kays-Ponger and Uselton Funeral Home in Punta Gorda is serving the family.
