December 24, 2020 after contracting the Covid-19 virus.
Born in Atlantic City, NJ, July 6, 1933, and adopted at birth by the late Rubie Perkins Cleveland and
Abram Perkins of West Hartford, CT. She never sought out her birth parents, because she always said
she was most fortunate to be adopted by the most loving parents in the world. Abram passed away
when Nancy was a very young girl. As devastating as that was, she could not have been more blessed
when her mom met and married William C. Cleveland, who had a family of his own, which Nancy
became a welcomed part of. They then moved to Watertown, CT.
Nancy attended Southern Seminary College in VA for one year, where she became a very independent
woman for the 1950's. Traveling alone from CT to VA via buses and trains, was highly unusual for a
single girl at that time. She came back to CT and completed her teaching degree at the Women's
Teachers College in CT. She taught in both Watertown and Waterbury school systems for over 30 years,
and retired from Sprague School in Waterbury.
She was married to Clarence (Bud) Fischer for 45 years prior to his passing in 2007. The highlight of her
life was the birth of her sons, whom she loved dearly, Christopher (Brenda) of Port Orange, FL and
Lawrence (Donna) of Concord, NH. She was also blessed with two grandchildren, whom she and Bud
helped raise, adored, and sacrificed so much for, Krystle (Robert) Vozzella of Cabot, AK, and Cameron
(Sarah) Fischer of Cape Coral, FL, and was great grandma to Robert, Mason, Olivia, and Luna.
She also leaves a step brother, Elton Cleveland (103 years young) of TX, a step brother-in-law, The Rev.
Jack Post, of Cromwell, CT, a sister-in-law, Joan Johnson of Southbury, CT and several nieces and
nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her stepsister Gloria Post,
stepbrother Roger Cleveland, and stepsister in law, Peggy Cleveland.
Nancy enjoyed spending summers for many years at their island cottage on Bow Lake in NH, where she
watched her boys and grandchildren learn to swim, ski, and sail. She always looked forward to the
annual main event every summer, The Lobster Cookout. She also cherished attending the candlelight
Midnight service on Christmas Eve at the Watertown First Congregational Church, and memories of
watching her grandchildren in the Christmas Pageant. Nancy was an avid UCONN Husky basketball fan,
and could often be found yelling at the television during games.
Upon retirement, Bud and Nancy moved to Punta Gorda, FL, where they enjoyed sunshine and new
friends. Nancy valued the friendships she made over the years, keeping in touch with many including her
college roommate, and her retired teaching friends. Her most valued, however, was the one she shared
for over 40 years with Lorna Weingart, her best friend and "the daughter she never had". For her 80th
birthday, Nancy and Lorna made a lifelong dream come true, when they traveled together to Paris.
The family would like to thank her caregivers at Southport Square, especially Dominica for her
tenderness and compassion. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, services are postponed and may be
scheduled at a later date.
Memories endure only when shared. Please share a memory, photo, or message of condolence to
Nancy's family at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home.
