The daughter of J.C. and Beulah Lowe, Peggy was raised in the true pioneer fashion on the homestead of her grandparents, Tom and Docia Lowe. They grew their own vegetables, raised their own livestock, cooked on a wood stove, and held their church services under a grape arbor. It was a simpler time and formed an outlook on life that was never replaced.
In 1946, Peggy married her childhood friend, Vernon Crawford. Like many post war couples they moved to the city to find work and to raise a family eventually ending up in Punta Gorda. In the mid 60’s, Peggy began work as a nurse’s aide in the local hospital. She remained there over 25 years caring for the sick in the community. Even in later years, she would tell her doctor and nurses what she had been and how much she enjoyed doing the job.
Peggy was an avid gardener and loved to walk each afternoon surveying her flower beds, watering her precious lilies, and looking forward to them blooming every Spring. Her Christmas Cactuses were a favorite as well and when they bloomed it was a site to behold.
Peggy’s other passion was genealogy; a hobby she developed in later years. Without computers or the internet, she researched records, interviewed relatives, studied census and eventually compiled a family history going back to the 1700’s.
But FAMILY was the most important thing to Peggy and she encouraged her children and grandchildren to be there for each other, to forgive mistakes, to remember where they came from, and who they could count on.
Peggy is preceded in death by her beloved Vernon, her second husband, Albert Blain, her brother Thomas Lowe, her daughter Verna Steele, and her grandson, Jeffrey Steele.
She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Crawford, Jay Crawford (wife Linda), her daughter Barbara Crawford, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and her newest great, great grandchild who was born 3 days before her passing.
Services for Peggy will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home in Punta Gorda, with interment at 12:30 at Indian Spring Cemetery, Taylor Road, Punta Gorda, followed by a repast at Kays-Ponger & Uselton, open to all who would like to attend.
The family encourages plants in lieu of flowers so that they may be enjoyed later as a reminder of your thoughtfulness as they celebrate the life of Peggy.
