When my mom and dad went on vacation to Costa Rica, Uncle Billy came to Lakeland to take care of us four girls. We ranged in age from around four or five, to Alison, who was maybe in her early teens. Uncle Billy was a bachelor, fastidious, intellectual, private, and an avid reader. The thing I remember most was him never adding sugar to our ice tea, the way mom always made it. He told us adamantly, "Sugar is POISON." This was the 70s, and I think some people still considered sugar a super food. Uncle Billy was ahead of the curve on many cultural memes, and was more than a bit of an evangelizer. Whenever I think of Uncle Billy now, coming to take care of us four girls, sticky with chaos and dirt, for what must have been the longest ten days of his life, I still wonder what mom and dad had on him to make that happen. And better late than never: thanks, Uncle Billy. xoxo
