Elvie was born on February 4, 1959 in Whim Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana. She was the beloved youngest child to the late Raghunandan “Rag” Atchana and the late Apamah “Baba” Raghunandan. She was the beloved sister to six siblings: Florence, Leonard, Kenard, and the late Victor, the late Evelyn, and the late Ramana.
In 1975, Elvie married Doodnauth “Ronald” Somwaru and they shared 50 beautiful years together. Elvie and Ronald raised three daughters: Rehana, Joney, and Melanie. Family meant the most to Elvie. Her organized nature and her aesthetic touch is what truly made a home for her daughters to grow up in. She loved being a mother and wanted her daughters to have even more than what she had. She viewed the world with such wonder and curiosity, and she dearly hoped that her daughters would be able to explore the world in ways that she couldn’t.
Her motherly care extended to everyone. It didn’t matter whether someone was related to her or not. She was such a selfless person, providing for those that she loved, whether it was cooking them food, giving them supplies for school, or sending vegetables from her garden.
Elvie lived life with generosity, joy, and kindness. Although she was a shy person, she had an adventurous spirit and liked to go out. She was a fashionista, always going shopping and buying jewelry. She liked her "brilliants" but nothing was more brilliant than her smile.
When Elvie was diagnosed with cancer in 2021, she fought with resilience. Through her journey with cancer, she met each difficulty or devastating news with a steady strength and remarkable bravery.
Elvie leaves her cherished memories to her husband, her daughters, her siblings, cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family, dear friends, and all those who were graced with her innocence, her strength, her shy giggle, and her loving hugs. Those who love Elvie will always hold a soft place in their hearts for her.
Elvie will be forever missed. Forever remembered. Forever loved.
