Engineer Delio Hernandez Katimbang, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend, passed away on May 22, 2026, at the age of 80, following complications from necrotizing pancreatitis after a prolonged stay in the ICU.
Born on December 27, 1945, in Batangas, Philippines, Delio lived a life grounded in devotion to family, perseverance, and quiet strength. At the age of 27, he came to the United States in pursuit of greater opportunities, carrying with him a deep commitment to building a better future for those he loved. Through determination and hard work, he became a respected Structural Civil Engineer, earning his Masters of Engineering degree from Polytechnic Institute of Technology (now known as NYU Tandon School of Engineering) and dedicating the last 32 years of his career working for the City of New York before retiring.
Delio shared 56 loving years of marriage with his devoted wife, Gloria Villapando Katimbang. Together, they built a life filled with love, sacrifice and enduring partnership. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on May 24, 2026, but unfortunately Delio passed two days before.
Delio was a proud and loving father to Dex (Julie), Maryanne (Danny), and Gloria (Marcus), and a deeply cherished grandfather to Zach, Kayla, EJ, Kara, Brendon, Zoe, Kristina, Michael, Yasmine and Mylo. His family was the center of his world, and nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by them.
Affectionately known as “Engineer Delio,” he was admired not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for his generosity, humility, and gentle nature. As the eldest of eight siblings, he held a special place in his extended family and remained a steady source of guidance and support. He was a mentor to many and was always ready to offer wisdom, encouragement and a helping hand.
Outside of his career, Delio found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved golfing, spending time on his beloved boat, Kayra, following and participating in the stock market, singing karaoke, learning to play the guitar and reading. He had a wonderful sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him and a warm presence that made people feel at ease and cared for.
Delio will be remembered for his kindness, steady strength and the deep love he gave so freely to his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and in the family he cherished so deeply.
