It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Droupatti “Lila” Basant, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Born on July 5, 1942, in West Demerara, Guyana, Lila lived a life defined by faith, family, and purpose.
Lila was a devoted wife to the late Gopaul (Cecil) Basant, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage and built a family grounded in love, faith, and togetherness. Their family was always at the center of their lives, and they shared a deep commitment to seeing their children and grandchildren grow up healthy, happy, and successful. Together, they created a foundation of love and family values that continues through the generations.
She was a loving and selfless mother to Camille (Rudy), Champa, Paul (Sunita), and Sherry (Jim). She always wanted the very best for her children and was extremely proud of the families they raised. Her love was unwavering, and her children always knew they were deeply loved and supported.
To her grandchildren: Melina, Brandon, Nerissa, Brian, Sarah, Rudesh, and Lauren, Lila was a devoted and loving grandmother who took immense pride in each of them. She loved hearing about their accomplishments and being there to celebrate their milestones. Some of her happiest moments were spent surrounded by her family, whether at family parties, prayers or simply gathered together. She was also a new great-grandmother to baby Chase, a role she was so proud to have.
Those who knew Lila will remember her warmth most of all. She had a beautiful way of making those around her feel loved and welcomed. She was happiest when she was with her family, always smiling, laughing, and enjoying the moments they shared together. Her home and her dining room table were places where family came together, and her love was felt in everything she did — from the meals she lovingly prepared to the time and attention she gave to each person she loved.
Lila was also a deeply devoted Hindu, and her faith was an important part of her daily life. She carried that devotion with her in the way she lived and in the values she passed down to her family.
She lived with purpose and love, and her greatest joy was the family she and Gopaul built together. The values they instilled, the traditions they created, and the love they shared will continue through their children, grandchildren, and generations to come.
Lila will be deeply missed and forever loved by the family who was the center of her world. May she rest in eternal peace.
