Evelyn Agnes Ruger, born Evelyn Karcher, Glendale, NY, February 16, 2021 of natural causes. Evelyn had one sister, Florence Grimm and her mother and father were Johanna and Louis Karcher. Evelyn was married to Harold Charles Ruger for 30 years and had two sons, James Richard Ruger and Daniel George Ruger. Both Harold and Dan pre-deceased Evelyn, she is survived by Jim. Her passing was one day after Dan’s birthday. Much of her family life was spent in Queens, NY and from 1950-1979 she lived in Queens Village. Many of our friends know Evelyn from various times during her life. First from Our Lady of Lourdes, where she and Harold would drive the kids to track meets and help at the practices almost every Saturday at Braddock park. Evelyn started the girls track team at OLL and she helped to get a CYO girls track program going in Queens. This was around 1965-66. Evelyn and Harold worked the booths at the OLL bazaar each year, she was a Cub Scout den mother and even substituted at OLL a few times, filling in for Mrs. Sullivan (7th grade) and Sister George Michael. In our HS school years, Harold and Evelyn and our dear family friends, Grace and Caesar Fusco, would drive all the neighborhood kids to hear the band that Jim, Steve Fusco and their friends had formed regardless of where the band was playing and then pick up all the kids so everyone arrived home safely. In the mid-late 70s, Evelyn worked in the Registrar’s office at St. John’s University, where she made many friends who have stayed in touch with her all of these years. Evelyn moved to Jacksonville, NC around 1982 when Dan entered the US Navy Chaplain Corp and his first tour of duty was with the Marines at Camp LeJuene. Evelyn moved to San Diego in 1994 to help Dan when he became ill and finally passed in 1996. She stayed in San Diego until 2017, where she worked as the inventory controller at Courtesy Chevrolet until she retired. She has many friends from there who loved her dearly. Jim moved Evelyn to NJ in 2017 and then to Cape Coral, FL in February, 2019, so she could be close to where he was and is residing. Evelyn passed peacefully and her last memories were of her home in Queens Village with Harold, her sons and our dog, Lovey. If anyone wishes to make donations in Evelyn’s name, please consider: Wounded Warriors, Tunnels to Towers, St. Jude’s Childrens’ Hospital, Shriners Childrens’ Hospital or any charity that cares for or rescues pets.
