Felipe de Jesús Montes Sánchez

Our profoundly loved Felipe de Jesús Montes Sánchez passed away on May 1, 2022 at the hearty and hardy age of 88, near his NY home of Oakland Gardens in Queens, NY. He had been struggling with health issues over the past year, but faced each challenge with tenacity and a stubborn will to live his life freely. A man of habit, to his last day he continued with his daily routine of playing tennis and going to the gym. Never losing the pep in his step, Felipe was doing well and making plans to start life anew, but he sadly succumbed to a cardiac arrest on his way home from a day of exercise.

Born on the 5th of February 1934 in Mexico City, Mexico, he was a loving son to María de la Luz Sánchez Alvarez (Mama Lucha) and Jesús Montes Santoyo (Papa Chucho). He grew up alongside 2 sisters, Alicia and Josefina, and 2 brothers Enrique and Antonio - a total of 5 siblings altogether.

A middle child and the eldest of the brothers, Felipe grew up in the neighborhood of Tepito, which at the time was a place of few resources, and naturally presented his family with many limitations. Despite the odds, he rose above the challenges, learned stenography with A. Contreras (developer of the Spanish Method), and quickly became one of the top stenographers in the country, traveling the world to demonstrate the Method, eventually landing a job with the presidency. This, along with his adventurous spirit led him to a job opportunity in Washington, DC where the seeds of a new life in the United States began to germinate. Once established in New York, he began working as a reporter at the United Nations, and ultimately became the Chief of the Spanish Verbatim Section, and further traveled the world before finally retiring in 2012.

At the U.N. Felipe met and fell deeply in love with the lady who would become his wife and companion in life, Claudette. They married in Mexico on April 12th, 1975 and moved briefly to La Paz, Baja California Sur, where Felipe took a temporary job as the Governor’s aide. A year in Los Angeles, they later had their one and only daughter, Claudia Valentina. Claudita and his grand-daughter Claudia Bianca were truly Felipe's adoration and the light of his life.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, stepson Nick, and granddaughter, along with his sister Alicia and brother Antonio, in Mexico City.

Fiercely independent, he was also a wanderlust, an avid reader, and a bohemian at heart who loved boleros, and had the opportunity to cross paths with people like José Alfredo Jímenez, Consuelo Velásquez and even Pelé. It was a life well lived, the only way he knew how: his way.

Felipe will be remembered for his gentle, kind and selfless spirit, his humor, and above all the quiet but infinite love he had for his family who he never ceased to find ways to support.

Nuestro profundamente amado Felipe de Jesús Montes Sánchez falleció el 1 de mayo de 2022 a la vigorosa edad de 88 años, cerca de su casa de Oakland Gardens en Queens, Nueva York. Durante el último año había estado teniendo dificultades de salud, pero enfrentó cada desafío con tenacidad y una voluntad obstinada de vivir su vida libremente. Un hombre de hábitos, hasta su último día continuó con su rutina diaria de jugar tenis e ir al gimnasio. Sin perder la energía en su paso, Felipe estaba mejorando y haciendo planes para comenzar una nueva vida, pero lamentablemente sucumbió a un paro cardíaco en camino a casa después de un día de ejercicio.

Nacido el 5 de febrero de 1934 en la Ciudad de México, fue el hijo amoroso de María de la Luz Sánchez Alvarez (Mama Lucha) y Jesús Montes Santoyo (Papa Chucho). Creció junto a sus 2 hermanas, Alicia y Josefina, y sus 2 hermanos Enrique y Antonio, un total de 5 hermanos.

Hijo del medio y el mayor de los hermanos, Felipe creció en el barrio de Tepito, que en ese momento era un lugar de pocos recursos, y naturalmente presentaba a su familia muchas limitaciones. A pesar de las adversidades, superó los desafíos, aprendió taquigrafía con A. Contreras (desarrollador del Método español) y rápidamente se convirtió en uno de los mejores taquígrafos del país, viajando por el mundo para demostrar el Método, finalmente consiguiendo un trabajo con la presidencia. Esto junto con su espíritu aventurero, lo llevó a una oportunidad laboral en Washington, DC, donde las semillas de una nueva vida en los Estados Unidos comenzaron a germinar. Se trasladó a Nueva York, y una vez establecido, comenzó a trabajar como reportero en las Naciones Unidas y finalmente se convirtió en el Jefe de la Unidad de Reporteros/Taquígrafos en español, de donde se retiró en el 2012.

En la ONU Felipe conoció y se enamoró profundamente de la dama que sería su esposa y compañera de vida, Claudette. Se casaron en México el 12 de abril de 1975 y se mudaron brevemente a La Paz, Baja California Sur, donde Felipe tomó un trabajo temporal como ayudante del Gobernador. Un año después en Los Ángeles tuvieron a su única hija, Claudia Valentina. Claudita y su nieta Claudia Bianca fueron verdaderamente la adoración de Felipe y la luz de su vida.

Le sobreviven su esposa, hija, hijastro Nick y nieta, junto con su hermana Alicia y su hermano Antonio, en la Ciudad de México.

Ferozmente independiente, también era un alma viajera, un ávido lector y un bohemio de corazón que amaba los boleros, y tuvo la oportunidad de cruzarse con personas como José Alfredo Jímenez, Consuelo Velásquez e incluso ¡Pelé! Fue una vida bien vivida, de la única manera que supo hacerlo: a su manera.

Felipe será recordado por su espíritu gentil, amable y desinteresado, su humor y sobre todo el amor silencioso pero infinito que tenía por su familia a la que nunca dejó de encontrar la manera de apoyar.

Nuestra familia quisiera agradecerle por todas sus amables palabras y sentimientos. Que su memoria y legado vivan para siempre en todos aquellos cuyas vidas fueron tocadas por su hermoso espíritu.
