Having lost her mother at the age of 8, Gena was raised by her sisters. As a young woman, Gena was educated at Our Lady of Lourdes Boarding School in Miragoane, Haiti. To fulfill a deep desire to live her life in the service of others, she became a grade school teacher in Port-au-Prince.
In 1974, she married Pierre D. Laferiere. The union produced two children, Pierre and Sandy. Sadly, Pierre D. Laferiere preceded her in death.
Gena immigrated to the United States in the mid-1970s. Vowing to continue a life of service, she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Holliswood Nursing Home. She was later employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Oceanview Nursing Home for 22 years until she was forced to retire due to illness.
Gena loved to entertain her family and friends. She loved gardening, photography, interior design and was a perfume connoisseur. She always encouraged everyone to “stay beautiful.” She was a great cook and loved to dance. She also had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to travel. She visited Africa, Europe and Asia, many islands in the Caribbean and many U.S. states. Gena was well loved by everyone who knew her.
Gena had been an active member of Incarnation Roman Catholic Church since the early 1980s. She had a deep and unwavering faith in the Lord. Her faith kept her spirits high and gave her strength to fight her illness. Immediately before departing this life, she asked the Lord to take her into his arms and welcome her into his kingdom.
Gena has joined her sister Marie Anne who recently preceded her in death. She will be sadly missed by her children, Pierre and Sandy, her companion, Herve Cameau, sisters Marie Suze, Marguerite (Christophe Djassoa) and Ann Marie (Michel Rhau), brother Lefrand (Marie), granddaughter Siyonna, nieces Christine, Shella, Josiane, Nancy, Marsha, Michelov and Edna, nephews Herlandy, Jean, Hernandez, Randy and Kistom and a host of grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to name.
May her soul rest in peace.
