“Patrick” Gerald Wah, a Haitian artist and sculptor, was born on July 22, 1957, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to Marie Claire Raphael and Marcel Wah. He was a gifted, distinctive spirit, and he leaves behind a legacy shaped by his art, his heritage, and his unmistakable personality.
Art ran deep in Patrick’s family. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Marcel Wah, and his uncle, Edouard Wah, and found a voice of his own through painting, silk screen printing, and sculpture. His work carried Haiti’s artistic traditions to audiences around the world. Patrick’s art was exhibited internationally, including at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the UN’s 42nd anniversary, at the National Art Gallery in Zimbabwe, and in galleries across the United States and Europe. In 1993, the Screen Printing Association International awarded him second place for his silk screen La Princesse et ses servantes.
Outside his art, Patrick was eccentric, spirited, and always ready for a good time. He enjoyed a good drink, a Kent cigarette, and the company of the people around him. His grandmother affectionately nicknamed him Patrick, a name that became part of his identity despite not being his given name. It was a small but meaningful reflection of the personal history and family connections that helped shape the man he became.
He leaves behind his children, James Cesar Wah, Wagner Lubin, Naomie Wah, Stephen Wah, and Albert Wah; as well as his siblings Viola Pradieu, Rosette Merise, Lousintha Augustin, Carline Augustin, Clipett Jean Pierre, Abigail Augustin, Birgitha Augstin, Achard Augustin, Joseph Jacques Raphael, Jean Marie Martinez, Frankel Augustin, Tatiana Wah, Jean Marcel Wah Jr., Sandra Perpignant, Joanne Polansky, and his grandchildren Kevin César Wah, Gabrielle Hallie Wah, Jamie Wah, Aryah Holt, and Nathan Holt who carry his memory forward.
