I was shocked when I received the news that you crossed to the other side of the isle; simply mean that you are not too far from us. As my uncle, I did not know you that well or even established a relationship however, I have learned that you were a great man with a humble heart. I met you in 1995 in Haiti with uncle Paul and sincerely I was touched by your kindness and your voice reminded me of my grandpa, Dessalines COUPET, whom I admired candidly.
I honestly cannot say that I miss you however, for the little time that we spent together back in 1995 I surely can say that you are remembered and will always be.
In God, through Chris, there is assurance of peace.

Today is the hardest day of the year and April 10th will always be a hard day for me. It was horrible to see him decline so quick and even worse to be unable to make him better . So, it is his 5th  anniversary burial today  and i am feeling anxious and having little flashbacks of his last few days of life. It just takes my breath way just thinking of it. my heart still hurts as if it was yesterday i miss him so very much
 Honoring him in the smallest way will bring comfort not closure.  
My thoughts are It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all .  Papa my buddy  my best friend .I always think about you and  I know the empty feeling on this day 
 and everyday as we both face grief.  Love you and continue to rest in peace

It's been a long three years without you, April 10 2012 _April 10 2015  but I know I must go on, for you would want me to. Thank you for all the wonderful memories I have of you & for being the best dad any person could have. I know you're smiling down on me from heaven, because I can feel your love all around me. Gone, but not forgotten. Daddy, we miss you so much. But we know you are in heaven watching over us. A wonderful father who will always be in my heart. I will miss you till the end of time. I was honored to care for you & would do it again in a heartbeat. I will cherish your memory always. Today is my father's birthday. He would have been 86..He died in April of 2010 .I am learning to give thanks for the things I have..be patient..I wish my father was still alive but He  left so quickly,  Poppa   I know that is how you wanted it, because your earthly body was getting worn out and you didn't want to fade away.  God is merciful and loves us all.  You dedicated all your life  providing for mom and us seven children will become professionals and eventually have a great future as well as a good life . You were a great father ,poppa , grandfather , friend, and my counselor .  I don't need a plaque to think of you all of the time, but it is a nice reminder of your strong yet smooth, warm hands rubbing my head  saying" my son" and God the Father's loving hands. Many people knew that Gerard Coupet was a good friend, husband, comedian, maybe even politician.  More than anything else, he was our grandpa, but firstly, my dad.  He was the only father figure I've ever had.   So much goes into that earlier statement ‘My Dad'.  For the whole family, Papato was our rock, our support.  He was the example that we looked up to.  He was our friend, and he was sometimes our enemy, but more often than not, he was our mentor and our protector.

Papato had a work ethic that is rarely seen anymore these days.  He worked hard in his country to make a name for himself, then moved to the United States where he toiled to provide a comfortable living for his family.

Papato was always a hard worker, a handyman of sorts.  I have vivid memories of him hammering away at things.  I remember once when I was young, he was hammering away in the backyard fixing my 4 wheel bike.  It was me Papa and Mamandein sitting by this strawberry barrel that we had.  Papato's hammering must have upset Mother Nature because all of a sudden a swarm of bees rushed out of the barrel buzzing at us.  We all started running; however, I soon stopped running and just let the swarm overtake me as I cried.  I remember Papa and Mamandein yelling and waving at me to run over to them but still I just sat and cried.  Papa then heroically ran back into the swarm, picked me up, and carried me to safety.  Even though that's an isolated situation, that basically demonstrates the kind of man, Papato was: he would run into the swarm just to help out a friend.  I truly learned this once when I met a stranger that knew Papato.  I remember when I was visiting Miami with my aunt Maloue, I met an acquaintance of aunt Maude who told me that he knew Papato from Haiti.  “Gerard Coupet is a good man” he said, “he was the one who was able to get me connections to approve my papers to come to America”.  When I came back to New York and told Papa the man's name, his mind drew a blank.  That was because Papato helped many people with their papers, whether they were good friends or mere acquaintances.  That was just the kind of man he was, and that was the way that he and Mamandein raised their family.

After raising their kids, it was time for Papato to raise me.  As a father, Papa did things for me that other kids took for granted.  He taught me how to ride a bike.  He was always there when I needed someone on “father and son days” in elementary school.  He walked me home from school often in my early years.  Whenever I got out of line, Papa was not afraid to let me know to get my act together.  He was a stern man, but also he was a great charmer.  People who met Papa would always talk about how funny and witty he was.  If at the end of my days, I'm half the person that Gerard Coupet was, then I'll be a proud man.

Whether you know it or not, the reason why so many of you came here tonight is not to mourn Papa's death or to comfort each other.  But it is to celebrate the life that he so humbly led.  Even if you never met Papato, the reason you love his children or wife so much is because of the influence that he had on them. Next week, when you all go back to work, church, and continue to touch the people around you. Remember, that you are what you are because of Gerard Coupet,  and despite the pain that you feel right now, in this moment, Papato will always continue to smile down upon us and thrive through the love that we have for him in our hearts.

J'ai connu monsieur Gerard Coupet deux ans environ avant son voyage pour  l'eternite.  Deja, sa sante etait precaire.  En le cotoyant, en partageant ses conversations, je peux  dire que Gerard etait une ame petrie par l'oraison quotidienne et murie par une force de caractere.

Son ardeur pour le travail lui avait permis de realiser son reve, c'etait de pourvoir au bonheur de son foyer et de soigner l'education de ses enfants.

Il est parti tranquillement, dans un moment de priere, entoure de sa  famille qu'il cherissait tant, desirant rencontre son Seigneur et revoir ses freres qui l'ont precede a la cite celeste.

Que son ame repose en paix!

Papa to is a father for me  and I will never forget how he helped me in life. He was the first person who brought my daughter to school. He was always there for us no matter how hard it was for him. He was in good hands when on earth but he is in better hands now in heaven and one day on my blessed time, we will meet again. His spirit is always with us everyday

Oh Papa, Every time I would see you, those two words always made my day "my daughter" with the Haitian accent. Even to this day, I hear your voice in my head calling me. You were a wonderful father, more than any son, daughter, granddaughter and grandson can ask for. You always had a spirit that just brightened up the day and that spirit will stay with each and every one of us. You will always have a special spot in my heart. I love you papa, always and forever. Dad, you were an ideal father to me. You did everything in your capacity to impart me good education, a wonderful life and good teachings. You were always there to guide me. Even though you led a simple life yourself, yet you always tried to give me what I aspired for, asked for. I really looked up to you when it came to choosing principles of life. You lived a life of commitment and sacrifice and you showed me what it takes to be great parents.
 I feel really bad that God took you away from all of us so soon, just when it was time for you to enjoy the fruits of your labour."Dad, I love you. And I will never forget the good things you have taught me. I will always appreciate that you loved me, too. And I will always miss you when you are gone." If I reflect on the good things always, then it makes it easier. So this is what I try to do always.
