Howard Ruben Slater, born May 30, 1925, passed away on November 5, 2026, at the age of 101. A longtime resident of Bellerose, New York, Howard’s life was marked by steady devotion, quiet strength, and the kind of warmth that made others feel instantly at ease. He will be remembered with deep affection by all who had the good fortune to know him.
Lovingly called Howie, he carried himself with a gentle grace—sweet-natured, deeply likable, and sincerely welcoming. He had a way of turning everyday moments into something comforting, and he took special pride in making a house a home. Howie loved having people around him, and in his presence, visitors didn’t feel like guests for long; they felt included, cared for, and truly welcome.
Howie’s faith mattered to him, and as a devoted member of the Episcopalian tradition, he lived with a steady sense of reverence and purpose. He was also a lifelong reader, drawn especially to historical non-fiction—always curious about the lives, decisions, and turning points that shaped the world.
In his working life, Howie was an accountant at Payne Weber, bringing diligence and reliability to his profession. Beyond work, he found joy in the living world around him: he was a fabulous gardener, attentive and patient with what he grew, and he loved animals with an easy tenderness that spoke to his kind heart.
Howie’s long life leaves a lasting imprint—one made of kindness, welcome, faith, and the quiet, enduring comfort of being loved.
A Committal Service will be held at Flushing Cemetery, 163-06 46th Ave, Flushing, NY 11358, US, on November 7, 2026, at 9:30am.
