Joel Johnson (Joe) was born on July 15, 1969 through the union of Mary Simpkins and the late Jeffrey Johnson in Brooklyn, NY. He departed this life on November 13, at St. John’s Hospital. Joe grew up in Brooklyn and Queens, completing his education in Queens and worked in construction until he became disabled. He was given the nickname JoeBoy by his Momma (grandma) and she was the only one that he allowed to call him by that name. He also had another nickname given by his father, “The Boss” and his brother was the “Rotten Kid” because even though he was the youngest, he always tried to boss his brother around and get them both in trouble and it never stopped after they became adults. He was very comical and close to his brother.
Joe was well known in every neighborhood he lived in because he talked to everyone, especially older people. He loved dogs but he would feed his mother’s tuna fish to stray cats. He was a good Chess player, competitive and tried to cheat his brother if he could get away with it.
The past few months Joe was in and out of hospitals and rehabilitation facilities suffering and in so much pain. He leaves to mourn and cherish his memories: his mother and Pop, brother Eric, daughter Brittney, son Jahmel, aunts, uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
There are no words to describe the pain in our hearts of the loss of our Joe, but our consolation is knowing that he is no longer suffering. We will miss you but know that you are finally free of the pain and suffering.
